Getting started with Microsoft Teams

What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a cloud-based team communication and collaboration app that is part of the Office 365 suite of applications. Its core capabilities include persistent messaging, video meetings, file sharing (including real-time file co-authoring), and collaborative workspaces that can be integrated with other Office 365 services and extensions that integrate with third-party applications.

Terms of Use

The first time you log into any SharePoint Online-based services, such as OneDrive, you will be prompted to accept the Microsoft Teams Terms of Use before being allowed to sign in.

Teams are approved for  low, moderate, and high-risk data based on the teams' underlying structure: Office 365 Groups and SharePoint Online. For a more detailed description of the data classification levels at Yale University, please review Data and Information Classification.

Please Note:If you have sensitive or confidential data, follow minimum security standards for classifying the data you store.

For advice in choosing storage or a collaboration solution that meets your needs, contact the ITS Help Desk at 203-432-9000 or your local IT support provider.

How do I access Teams?

You can log into the Teams web portal at https://teams.microsoft.com using your email address and password.

You can launch the desktop application for Windows or macOS by searching for Teams and clicking the icon. If you do not already have Teams installed, it can be obtained for managed workstations from the Software Center. For non-managed workstations, log into Teams using the web portal above and select the Download Desktop app icon in the navigation bar.

Currently, the web portal and desktop application share the same functionality and layout, so using one or the other is a matter of personal preference.

If you are new to Teams and want to learn more about it, Microsoft hosts a Teams Getting Started Guide and some helpful Teams Training Videos.

For more in-depth help, we suggest you search Microsoft's Teams Help Center (Knowledge and Training) and Teams FAQ.
