Preventing Unwanted Messages From Being Sent to Mailman Lists

If your list is receiving many unwanted messages, you can turn on emergency moderation. This will temporarily hold all messages sent to the list until an administrator or moderator approves them.

  1. Login to https://mailman.yale.edu/mailman/admin/YourListName (replace with your list name)
  2. Go to General Options.
  3. Set Emergency moderation of all list traffic to Yes.
  4. Click Submit Your Changes.

Unsolicited Messages from Specific Email Addresses

If you are receiving unsolicited messages from specific addresses, you can add them to the lists of non-member addresses whose postings will be held for moderation, automatically rejected, or automatically discarded. 

  1. Login to https://mailman.yale.edu/mailman/admin/YourListName (replace with your list name)
  2. Go to Privacy Options.
  3. Click Sender Filters.
  4. Add the email address to the applicable field. 
    1. To hold emails in moderation, add the email to List of non-member addresses whose postings will be immediately held for moderation.
    2. To automatically reject emails, add to List of non-member addresses whose postings will be automatically rejected.
    3. To automatically discard, add the email to List of non-member addresses whose postings will be automatically discarded.
