With the file request feature in OneDrive for Business, you can request a file upload and receive file upload requests to share files securely.
When you request a file upload
- Anyone can send you a file - they don't need to have a OneDrive account
- People who respond to your request can only upload files; they do not have access to your OneDrive
- Files uploaded to your OneDrive can then be moved to Teams or SharePoint where necessary
Request a file upload
- Sign in to OneDrive with your email address and password.
- In OneDrive, select the folder where the files are uploaded, then select the Request Files button.
- Under What files are you requesting, enter a descriptive name for the requested files. The individual you request to upload it from will see this name in the file request.
- Select Next.
- You can either select the Copy link to copy the requested link and email it to anyone you would like to request files from, or you can enter the email address or addresses of the individuals you want to request files from. You can also add a message to the email that OneDrive sends to them.
- Select Done.
- You will receive a notification email whenever someone uploads files to your file request folder.
- If you want to edit the descriptive name of the file request, select the folder, click Request files again, then change the name. The individuals you sent the request will see the new name when they upload files.
Receiving a file upload request
- Click on the link received to see the details of the file upload request.
- Click on Select Files, browse to the appropriate folder, and select the requested file. If you need to add additional files, select Add more files.
- When you've selected all the requested files, click on Upload.
- Recipients will get an email notification once their files are successfully uploaded.
Note: If the request responder is a signed-in Office 365 user their identity is automatically recorded as part of the upload. If they are not signed-in Office 365 users, they will be asked to add a first name and last name to help identify the different files uploaded. The provided first name and last name are not validated; it is purely for the requestor's convenience and is not a guarantee of identity when the recipient is not signed in.
Stop requesting a file upload
You can stop requesting files by deleting the file request link once you receive files from others. Once you delete the link, the link will no longer work and cannot be restored. If you need to start collecting files in this folder again, create a new file request on the folder and send your recipients a new link or email invitation.
- In OneDrive, select the file request folder.
- Select the […] menu.
- Select Manage Access.
- Select the […] menu beside the request link in the Links Giving Access section.
- Click X next to the link.
- Click Delete link.
