Activating your Yale NetID


Overview

Activation of your Yale NetID can be completed through our Yale NetID Management portal. This activation process is the first step in obtaining access to all your university resources/tools.

When to Use

Steps 

  1. Navigate to the "Activate Your NetID" webpage: yale.edu/netid
  2. Select the option corresponding to your role at Yale:
    • Faculty, Staff, or Sponsored Identity
    • Student
    • Alumna/Alumnus
    • Dependent NetIDs
    • Other
  3. Select Continue
  4. Verifying access
    • For newly admitted Undergraduate Students:
      1. Select "Yale Admissions Status Portal Login"
      2. This will bring you to another page to log in with your email address & password
        • Undergraduate Admissions provides this login information
    • For Student, Faculty, Staff, or Sponsored Identity:
      1. Enter your Date of Birth and the PIN you were given
        • Four characters in each box
        • The PIN is case-sensitive; uppercase is required
    • For Dependent NetIDs:
      • Enter the Dependent NetID you are activating
    • For Other:
      • Enter your Social Security Number
  5. Select Continue
  6. Enter your non-Yale recovery email address.
    • You will then receive a verification email to validate the recovery email address. 
    • Email Address:
      • It is recommended that you enter a non-Yale email address. The NetID system will send confirmation notification emails to this address whenever a password change is processed for your NetID. The email address you enter here is not used for any other purpose.
      • A confirmation email will be sent to this address whenever a password change is processed for your NetID.
    • Password:
  7. Select Activate NetID. You may see a window while it processes.
  8. If there is an error with any of the information you enter, it will return to this screen and have the error message at the top, in red text. Once you correct that, select Activate NetID again.
  9. Confirmation page:
    • A confirmation page will appear, verifying that you have activated your NetID
    • You have the option to view your security information.
    • There will be an option to Check your DUO Everywhere Status and manage your DUO devices.

Common Issues

I don't have a PIN required for activation. NetID PINs can be provided or requested by your hiring department prior to your start date. If a PIN was not yet provided by your hiring department, contact the ITS Help Desk via Phone for further assistance.
I received a message saying my password is not strong enough.Reference our guidance for creating a strong NetID password help article below.
I believe my Date of Birth may be entered incorrectly. Contact the ITS Help Desk via Phone for further assistance.
Receive an "A system error has occurred" error message.Contact the ITS Help Desk via Phone for further assistance.
