Overview

The Yale VPN (Virtual Private Network) enables individuals to access Yale resources from off-campus locations securely. 

VPN is not required for accessing services such as Zoom, Canvas, Workday, Office 365, EliApps, the Software Library, and others. 

When to Use

• You are off-campus and need to access one of Yale's applications/services that requires a VPN connection (NetID sign-in required to view).
• You are connected to a public network (Cafe, Airport, etc.) and need to establish a secure connection on your iOS device.

Configure your iOS device for Yale's VPN

1. Download and install Cisco Secure Client from the App Store. Published by Cisco.
2. Once installed, launch the Cisco Secure Client app. You may be prompted to allow AnyConnect to send you notifications. It is recommended to click Allow. 
3. Select Connections.
4. Select Add New VPN Connection.
5. Configure the settings:
   • Description: Yale VPN
   • Server Address: access.yale.edu
   • Certificate: Automatic
6. Select Save.
7. If prompted with "AnyConnect" would like to Add VPN Configurations. Please select Allow.
   • Depending on your phone's security settings, you may be prompted to enter your phone's passcode.
8. Cisco Secure Client is now configured on your device.

Connect to Yale's VPN

1. Tap the Secure Client app.
2. Toggle the AnyConnect VPN switch to ON.
3. You'll get a pop-up "AnyConnect wants to use "yale.edu" to sign in. Press Continue. 
4. Enter your Yale email to begin the sign-in. 
   
   • If you've previously signed into your email on your device, you will see your account available. 
5. When prompted, enter your NetID password. 
6. Verify your identity by selecting Approve with Duo Security. You will be redirected to a DUO page.
7. Complete one of the available authentication methods previously set up with your DUO account. 
   • Ex. If you've set up the DUO mobile app, a push will be sent to your device to approve.
   • If you've signed in previously with DUO on your device and confirmed that the device belongs to you, you will proceed to the next screen automatically. 
8. You will then be connected to the VPN.
9. Disconnect from VPN when it is no longer required by toggling the Secure Client VPN switch to OFF.

Common Issues

Issue	Resolution
I do not see the Cisco app in the app store	Ensure you are searching for and selecting the Cisco Secure Client app published by Cisco.
I do not have a Yale email to sign into the VPN	If you do not have a Yale email address, you can use NetID@yale.edu for the login (for NetID, enter your own NetID).
